<p><strong>Does the tutor have expertise in your child’s academic needs?</strong></p>
<p>When seeking a tutor for your child, make sure the tutor in NYC has extensive experience working on the skills your child needs help with. For example, if your child is in early elementary school and needs reading help, ask the potential tutor or tutoring company about their experience tutoring reading to students your child’s age. <p>For some children, the transition back to school is seamless. They look forward to the excitement of reconnecting with friends, meeting their teachers, and starting new after school activities. Yet for other students, especially those who are neurodivergent, the transition back to school can be challenging. Help your neurodivergent child start the new school year strong with the ideas detailed below.</p>
<p><strong>Routines</strong></p>
<p dir="auto">For many children, summer is filled with free play, outdoor activities, and unstructured days. When the school year begins, however, routines become paramount. Rather than springing this transition on your child, start to integrate elements of their fall routine now, before the school year begins. You can discuss wake-up times and bedtimes with your child, both for school days and weekends. If they have been waking up closer to 9am in the summer but need to wake up at 7am during the week once the school year starts, have them set an alarm progressively earlier in the summer until they reach 7am right before the school year begins. The same applies to bedtime; if they have been going to bed later in the summer, have them start to go to sleep a little earlier each night. You can also create morning and afternoon checklists for tasks they’ll need to do once the school year begins. For example, their morning checklist might include getting dressed, brushing their teeth, eating breakfast, and preparing their backpack for school. You may want to come up with a list of menu items for breakfast and have them decide what they will eat for breakfast each day at the start of a given week, so you can prepare accordingly.  Their afternoon checklist might include having a snack when they get home, completing their schoolwork, turning in or putting away their homework in their backpack, eating dinner, and going to bed. The more structure you can integrate into your child’s day now, before the school year begins, the better!</p>
<p><strong>Get organized!</strong></p>
<p dir="auto">Having strong organizational skills is a key component to school success, especially for neurodivergent children who may struggle with executive functioning skills. Shop for school supplies with your child as early as you can so you have plenty of time to organize them. You may want to color code items by subject. For example, you may select green for science, blue for math, yellow for social studies, and so on. For each subject, there should be a folder and a notebook in the color that corresponds to that class. Encourage your child to write down their homework daily in an assignment book when they are at school, and perhaps highlight the assignment for each subject in its corresponding color. You may want to designate one day per week as a “clean out my backpack and folders day” where your child cleans out any items or papers from their backpack that they no longer need to be carrying with them.</p>
<p><strong>Distraction-free workspace</strong></p>
<p dir="auto">Neurodivergent students often become easily distracted when trying to complete their homework. Before the school year starts, set up a distraction-free work zone where your child will do their homework every day. This could be a desk in their room or a spot in a communal area, like a kitchen or dining room table. Make sure they have all the supplies they need for completing their homework, like pens, pencils, paper, a calculator, scissors, and highlighters. When the supplies run low, refill them right away to avoid having your child wander around in the middle of a homework session looking for more supplies. If they plan to work in a communal area, they can carry a portable supplies bin from their bedroom to their homework spot and back when they’re done, containing all the supplies they will need to complete their homework.</p>
<p><strong>Connect with your child’s teachers</strong></p>
<p dir="auto">Most neurodivergent children have very unique needs. Before the school year begins or right after it starts, set up a meeting with your child’s teacher and their other service providers if relevant. Tell them about your child, including which techniques have and haven’t worked for them in the past, and set up a line of communication going forward. Perhaps you will check in with them once per month via email or set up regular phone calls to discuss your child’s progress. Additionally, you should consistently advocate for your child; while they may be doing well in school at one point in time, that could change quickly and their academic performance could take a downturn. Don’t wait for your child to struggle. Be proactive in helping them succeed and seeking additional support for them if needed. If the school year progresses and your child continues to struggle academically despite these interventions, you may want to consider private tutoring, which can be custom-tailored to your child’s needs and help them thrive in school.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For many students with learning disabilities, the idea of applying to and succeeding in college can be daunting. Yet many students with learning disabilities have achieved great success in college and beyond. The ideas below can help you excel and thrive in your college journey.</p>
<p><strong>Applying to college</strong></p>
<p>Applying to college can be an overwhelming process for all students, but for students with learning disabilities, this process can be even more challenging. You may want to start by researching various institutions and looking at the support services they offer for students with learning disabilities. If you can, try to visit the colleges you are considering once you have narrowed down your search, and spend some time in the disability office learning about the services they offer. Once you start the application process, it’s up to you to decide whether to share your diagnosis but it may be helpful for colleges to know what your needs are. Doing so may help provide a more complete picture of your profile and allow colleges to better understand your needs. If you do decide to disclose your disability, make sure you have support documentation, including evaluations, IEPs, or 504 plans. If the school requires a standardized test for admission, you may want to apply for accommodations for these exams. You might also want to also consider test-optional schools where you may not be required to take a test at all for admission.</p>
<p><strong>At college</strong></p>
<p>Once you are accepted and have chosen which college to attend, one of your first visits should be to the school’s disability office. If you are seeking services, you will need to submit the documentation of your learning disability to this office so they can verify which services and support you are eligible for. The office will then help manage and coordinate your support throughout your college journey.</p>
<p><strong>Tutoring</strong></p>
<p>Many colleges offer free tutoring to students with learning disabilities. This may come in the form of peer tutoring from other college students, or it may be through federal funding that is available for students with disabilities. Some schools offer learning centers where students can come in-person for help. When you are at college, if your school offers a learning center, you may want to visit it, meet the tutors and staff members, and determine how they can help you. You can also look into private specialized learning disability tutoring if you feel that’s more suitable for you.</p>
<p><strong>Accommodations</strong></p>
<p>It is important to determine which accommodations you may need while at college. You might need extra time on tests, or perhaps you will need to take your tests in another location like a learning center. Other accommodations you might qualify for include note takers, preferential seating, audio versions of textbooks, access to a computer during tests, and other related accommodations based on your disability.</p>
<p><strong>Organizational skills</strong></p>
<p>A large key to success in college is developing strong organizational skills. Try to build your time management skills to help you manage your classes, workload, and other obligations. For example, you might want to learn and practice the ET/AT time management technique, where you predict how much time you think it will take to complete a task (which is the ET, or estimated time), then compare it to the AT, or actual time it takes to complete that task. You can also work on planning out your schedule in a physical or electronic calendar and work on breaking down assignments into individual steps. Additionally, you can work on techniques for prioritizing tasks by listing the most important tasks at the top of your list and less important tasks beneath that. You can also use your phone as a tool to set alerts before appointments to further help with time management. If organization is still a challenge, executive functioning coaching can help you develop these skills.</p>
<p><strong>Self-advocate</strong></p>
<p>In college (and in life), it’s important to advocate for yourself, especially if you have a disability. Try to fully understand your learning disability and which tools have or haven’t helped you in the past. Identify the types of services you think you would benefit from and seek them out. If you feel you are struggling despite the support you are getting at any given time, seek additional resources or tutoring. Go to your school’s disability office, explain what is going on, and ask them what they can do to further help you. You should also know your rights. There are federal laws that protect you and ensure that you receive the services and accommodations that you need. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits any discrimination towards individuals with disabilities.</p>
<p>Students with learning disabilities absolutely have the ability to thrive in college. It is important to visit your school’s disability office and learn the types of support and services they offer. You can also seek tutoring and accommodations as needed, strengthen your organizational skills, and self-advocate. Following these tips will help you on your path towards success in college and in life after school.</p>

<p>Your child was diagnosed with a learning disability, and you don’t know where to turn. There may be some extra support your child’s school offers for building academic skills, but many students with learning disabilities benefit from specialized learning disability tutoring outside of school. What should you look for in a tutor for students with learning disabilities?</p>
<p><strong>Specialized instruction</strong></p>
<p dir="auto">Students with learning disabilities typically need specialized tutoring, not generic tutoring or homework help. This tutoring should use research-based, multi-sensory methods and be catered to your child’s individualized needs. It is important that your child’s tutor learns about their diagnosis and areas of challenge and uses methods that are appropriate to their needs. Students with dyslexia, for instance, benefit from Orton Gillingham tutoring. Orton Gillingham is a research-based, multi-sensory technique that helps students develop their decoding and spelling skills. With this method, students typically learn the names of the letters and corresponding sounds using multi-sensory tools such as colored sand, audio-visual flash cards, and shaving cream. They then learn to blend these sounds together to form basic words. Later, they learn how to read and spell words containing blends, consonant digraphs, vowel digraphs, silent e patterns, r-controlled patterns, and so on, following a structured, systematic approach that integrates previously taught concepts as new ones are introduced.</p>
<p>Students with dyscalculia, or a math learning disability, typically benefit from specialized tutoring that is multi-sensory and integrates manipulatives specific to each concept, such as counters, base ten blocks, five frames, ten frames, fraction tiles, and so on. Those with dysgraphia, or a writing learning disability, also benefit from specialized tutoring catered to their needs &#8211; whether it’s learning to write a simple sentence, expanded sentence, simple paragraph, extended paragraph, or five paragraph essay. They should learn how to brainstorm, write, and self-check their work using a concrete, systematic approach, and should be given ample practice with each concept.</p>
<p><strong>Structured plan</strong></p>
<p dir="auto">With learning disability tutoring, it’s important that a structured plan is in place. The tutor shouldn’t just help the student with homework or bring in random reading or writing sheets or workbooks. They should follow a systematic plan, starting with the child’s current levels and building upwards from there. For instance, if a child is able to read words with consonant-vowel-consonant patterns (like cat, rug, or mit), but struggles with words containing blends (like slug, frog, or blimp), their Orton Gillingham tutoring should begin with words containing blends and move upwards from there. Likewise, with other skills such as writing and math, the learning disability tutor should identify the starting point based on your child’s levels and come up with a structured plan to build their skills starting from where they are and moving upwards.</p>
<p><strong>Review the child’s evaluation</strong></p>
<p dir="auto">Students with learning disabilities are typically evaluated in order to identify their diagnosis and specific needs. This may be an evaluation done at school or a more comprehensive private neuropsychological evaluation. For effective learning disability tutoring, the tutor should thoroughly read the child’s evaluation to gain a picture of their overall profile and academic needs in order to best help them. Many students with learning disabilities who have been evaluated have IEPs (Individualized Educational Programs) detailing their needs, goals, and necessary services. Others have a 504 plan detailing accommodations they should receive at school. The learning disability tutor should also read these documents and integrate any relevant information about the child’s profile into the tutoring.</p>
<p><strong>Build a rapport</strong></p>
<p>Having chemistry and a strong rapport is a key part of learning disability tutoring. Tutors for students with learning disabilities should get to know the child and their interests before delving into academic work. Many children with learning disabilities have experienced negativity surrounding school and their academic performance, so the tutor should try to be as positive and uplifting as possible when working with the child, building not just their academic skills but also their overall self-esteem.</p>
<p>Knowing what to look for in tutors for students with learning disabilities can be challenging, but using specialized instruction, having a structured plan, integrating information from the child’s evaluation, and building a strong rapport are key elements of successful learning disability tutoring.</p>

Your child will likely be given an IEP defining their specific needs and services, and then should be given specific services, like special education tutoring, speech therapy, physical therapy, or other related services. <p>Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common mental condition that often leads people to experience inattention and hyperactivity—but Paris Hilton sees the mental condition partly as a benefit.</p>
<div class="my-5">Also known as a form of neurodivergence, some 8 million Americans, or 5 percent of the population, have ADHD, according to <a class="article-hover-class" href="https://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/adult-adhd-facts-statistics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WebMD data</a>. Many live their lives undiagnosed.</div>
<p>“ADHD isn’t a limitation; it’s a superpower,” Hilton said. “It’s my secret weapon in a world that often tells us to play it safe.”</p>
<div class="my-5">Hilton wrote about her ADHD diagnosis in an essay published in <a class="article-hover-class" href="https://www.teenvogue.com/story/paris-hilton-why-adhd-is-my-superpower" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Teen Vogue on Oct. 3</a>.</div>
<p>She is the great-granddaughter of Conrad Hilton, who founded Hilton Hotels.</p>
<p>“ADHD is the reason I’ve been able to anticipate trends, it’s given me the creativity to build an empire, the drive to keep pushing the limits, and the empathy to connect with people on a deeper level,” she said. “One of the most powerful gifts of ADHD is the ability to hyper-focus on things I am passionate about.”</p>
<p>But not everyone with ADHD has the same resources, notoriety, or outcomes as Hilton, according to Veronica West, a registered and practicing psychologist.</p>
<p>Hilton became a household name after starring in the Fox reality series “The Simple Life” with Nicole Richie from 2003 to 2007.</p>
<p>“Her experience, while positive, isn’t the norm for everyone,” West told The Epoch Times. “Many people struggle with focus and organization, so while ADHD might help Paris ‘build an empire,’ it can feel more like trying to herd cats for others.”</p>
<p>Hilton launched a line of perfumes and colognes in 2004 that has earned more than $2 billion with names such as Just Me, Heiress, Heir, Can Can, Fairy Dust, Siren, and Tease. She also founded the company 11:11 Media, which includes TV, podcasts, digital, licensing, and music projects.</p>
<p>“My mind is constantly buzzing with thoughts, ideas, and distractions,“ Hilton said. ”People often see the glamorous, successful side of me, but behind the scenes, there are days when the noise inside my head can be so loud that it’s difficult to find clarity. I’ve learned over time to manage my tough moments by creating structure around my life.”</p>
<p>One of those structures is listening to everything she reads in audio form.</p>
<p>Books on tape are a great option for not only people with ADHD but also those who have a reading disorder such as dyslexia, according to Emily Levy, an ADHD expert and founder of EBL Coaching, a one-on-one tutoring program.</p>
<p>“Individuals can process more of the information from audiobooks without having to focus on decoding complex words,” Levy told The Epoch Times. “However, some people can become easily distracted when listening to audiobooks and miss important parts of the plot.”</p>
<p>ADHD is caused by a combination of genetics and environmental factors and is diagnosed more among men than women, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Some 5.4 percent of men are diagnosed compared to 3.2 percent of women.</p>
<p>“Their symptoms don’t show up as the typical male overactivity and inattentiveness,” Cincinnati wellness and education expert L&#8217;Taundra Everhart told The Epoch Times. “For females, symptoms can include feelings of overwhelm, anxiety or depression, disorganization, money or time management issues.”</p>
<p>Among teens, between the ages of 12 and 17 years old, 13 percent who are diagnosed are boys and 4.2 percent are girls.</p>
<p>Hilton was diagnosed as an adult.</p>
<p>“I spent years feeling misunderstood, punished for the way my brain worked,” she said. “We live in a world where we’re often expected to fit into boxes, to follow the rules, and to do things the way everyone else does. But my ADHD has taught me that the most magical things happen when you break free from those expectations.”</p>
<p>Breaking too many rules, however, often has consequences, such as arrest, probation, and incarceration.</p>
<div class="my-5">A study published in the journal Psychological Medicine <a class="article-hover-class" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4301200/#:~:text=Overall%2C%20the%20estimated%20prevalence%20of,based%20on%20diagnostic%20clinical%20interviews" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimates</a> that 25.5 percent of incarcerated populations have ADHD based on diagnostic clinical interviews.</div>
<p>“The stigma surrounding ADHD—and neurodivergence in general—needs to change,” Hilton said. “We need to stop labeling neurodivergent individuals as ‘disordered’ and start recognizing the unique gifts they bring.”</p>
<p>Hilton herself was arrested during a traffic stop in 2011 when a police officer found cocaine in her possession. She pled guilty to two misdemeanors and was sentenced to probation.</p>
<p>“Substance misuse is a very real ramification of ADHD, particularly if it hasn’t yet been diagnosed,” licensed clinical social worker John Fouts told The Epoch Times. “Impulsivity, risk-taking, persistent tardiness, and being argumentative are not uncommon behaviors associated with ADHD. That doesn’t mean the person is stupid, lazy, or not serious.”</p>
<p>Fouts is clinical director of training with Victory Starts Now, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that supports previously incarcerated people.</p>
<div class="my-5">Adults with ADHD are also nearly three times more likely to become addicted to drugs and alcohol than those who don’t have an ADHD diagnosis, according to Children and Adults With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (<a class="article-hover-class" href="https://chadd.org/about-adhd/co-occuring-conditions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CHADD</a>), a nonprofit organization that supports people with ADHD and their families.</div>
<p>“Those with ADHD are much more likely to abuse these substances, possibly because they tend to be more impulsive and struggle with behavioral challenges,” Levy said.</p>
<p>But Levy doesn’t agree with Hilton about eliminating the association of ADHD with labels identifying people’s challenges.</p>
<p>“There are medications that work wonders for individuals with ADHD in helping them stay focused and on-task,” Levy said. “Many neurodivergent individuals need concepts taught to them in certain ways and benefit from specific accommodations tailored to their needs. Without the label, they may not receive the appropriate support.”</p>
<p>Hilton did not reply to requests for comment.</p>

<p><strong>Help Your Child with Learning Challenges</strong></p>



<p>Having a child with learning difficulties can be challenging. You see them struggling in school, losing focus when completing tasks, or frequently forgetting to turn in assignments. You want to assist them but you just don’t know how. Help your child with learning challenges excel with the ideas detailed below.</p>



<p><strong>Start early!</strong></p>



<p>If you notice your child struggling with learning, attention, behaviors, or any combination thereof, speak to your child’s teacher as soon as you can. They should be able to share valuable advice on how your child is doing in school and any difficulties they are noticing. If your child’s teacher is seeing notable challenges, it may make sense for you to request a formal evaluation from your child’s school to gauge any learning disabilities, attentional challenges, or other diagnoses your child may have. If a diagnosis is made, an IEP will likely be created and your child may be entitled to special services at school, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, special education tutoring, and other related services. <p><strong>Set routines at home</strong></p>



<p>In addition to special services your child may receive at school, you can help them at home by setting routines. They should wake up at a certain time, do their homework at a specific time, and go to bed at a set time – ideally roughly the same time each day to establish consistency. If your child has weak organization or executive functioning skills, you may want to use checklists for tasks that need to be done at home. For instance, a morning checklist might include brushing their teeth, getting dressed, having breakfast, and packing their backpack. An afternoon checklist might include having a snack, completing their homework, putting their homework in the appropriate place to be turned in the next day (or submitting it online that night), and organizing their backpack for school the next day.</p>



<p><strong>Create a study space</strong></p>



<p>Your child should have a well-organized, well-lit study space for completing their homework each day. This space can be a desk in their room or even a table in a communal area if that is the only option. Just make sure the space is fully equipped with all supplies your child may need for competing their homework – pens, pencils, notebooks, scissors, markers, paper – anything they might need for all types of assignments should be there. This will help prevent them from getting up midway through homework time to find supplies, which could ultimately lead to distractions and diversions. <p><strong>Read with your child</strong></p>



<p>The more you read with your child, the more they will learn to enjoy reading and the better their reading skills will become. Encourage your child to select a book on a topic they are interested in, like dinosaurs or sports. If your child struggles with reading, you might start by reading aloud to them. Stop throughout the book as you read to ask questions and discuss the characters, plot, and setting. Try to encourage your child to form a visual picture of what they are hearing in the story. You can even ask prompting questions, like “What time of day do you think it is?”, “What season is it?”, “How tall do you think the characters are?”, and so on. Eventually, when your child is ready, perhaps alternate the reading, where you read a section, then your child reads a section, and go back and forth. Down the road encourage your child to read the whole book aloud to you, and discuss the story while they are reading and after they are finished.</p>



<p><strong>Seek a tutor</strong></p>



<p>If your child continues to struggle despite your help at home, you may want to consider a special education tutor. This tutor should not just be a “homework helper,” but a tutor who specializes in helping students with learning disabilities or ADHD. <p>The transition into college can be challenging for any student. It often comes with anxiety, worry, and fear of the unknown. Yet for students who have learning disabilities, this transition can be exponentially difficult. Help your child with learning challenges transition into college with the ideas detailed below.</p>
<p><strong>Choose Interesting Classes</strong></p>
<p>Your child should look at the course options at their school and select classes on topics they are interested in. If they like stars, they may want to take a class on astronomy. If they enjoy writing, a class on poetry or fiction may be a good one to choose. Some students may even benefit from a reduced course load at the start of college so they don&#8217;t feel overwhelmed with work and deadlines. They may want to take fewer classes at once and spread out their courses over a longer period of time.  </p>
<p><strong>Scheduling</strong></p>
<p>Creating a well-organized schedule is key for success in college. Once your child has selected their classes, they should organize their schedule using a physical or virtual assignment book. In the assignment book, they should block out their courses so they know exactly when they need to be in class. They should also write in any upcoming assignments and tests, and even carve out study time. If they have a math exam on Friday, for instance, they might want to block out two hours per day, say 4-6pm, Monday-Thursday to spend time studying for the exam.</p>
<p><strong>Study Smart!</strong></p>
<p>Your child should learn effective study skills to help them excel in college. Taking notes is a big part of college classes, so they may want to identify what kind of learner they are (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and then use the style of note taking that is most suitable for them. For instance, if they are a visual learner, they may want to use a webbing style of note taking, where they draw a large circle in the center of their page and write the topic of the lecture inside it (like &#8220;World War I&#8221; ). Then as the teacher lectures, your child should add branches to the bubble with each new topic. If the first topic is &#8220;Causes of Word War I&#8221;, they can draw a line from the middle bubble to a new bubble and write &#8220;Causes of World War I&#8221; in the new bubble. Then they can create branches and new bubbles for information on the causes of World War I, and so on. If your child is a more linear learner, then outlining or a column-style form of note taking (with main ideas in the left column of a page and notes that correspond to each main idea on the right side) may be more appropriate. Your child can also work on highlighting important, salient details when reading and learning mnemonics and other tricks for memorizing facts.</p>
<p><strong>Seek Accommodations</strong></p>
<p>Colleges are required by law to provide accommodations to students with disabilities. Take action early to seek these accommodations so that your child has them in place before their classes start. They may qualify for early registration, untimed testing, priority seating in class, recordings of class notes, the use of a calculator, audio books, or other accommodations that may help them excel at school.</p>
<p><strong>Seek a Tutor</strong></p>
<p>If your child is still struggling to navigate college alone, hiring a tutor may help. This tutor can help your child select appropriate courses and create an organized schedule for tackling these courses. The tutor can also help your child build stronger executive functioning skills and explain any content within the courses that might be confusing.</p>
<p>College can feel overwhelming to just about any student. Yet most colleges have a multitude of resources for students with learning disabilities. Encourage your child to try these ideas and they will be well on their way to academic success. </p>

<p><strong>Praise their efforts</strong></p>
<p>It is important to praise your child’s efforts as much as possible.</p>
<p>Many children with learning disabilities work very hard on their schoolwork – often much harder than their peers – but their grades don’t reflect this effort. If your child doesn’t score well on a test or assignment but you know how hard they worked and how much time they put in, praise them! Make sure they know that you appreciate this effort, and that a strong work ethic is a skill that will ultimately help them become successful in life. The more you empower them and praise their hard work, the more confident they will become.</p>
<p><strong>Play up their strengths</strong></p>
<p>Children with learning disabilities may struggle with reading, writing, math, or executive functioning skills (or a combination of these skills), but they often have incredible gifts and talents. Those with dyslexia may be very creative and are talented artists. Others are fantastic actors, and many are very social with strong “people skills”. Play up these strengths with after school art classes or acting workshops – or perhaps even encourage them to babysit younger kids when they’re older to flex their great people skills. <p><strong>Use a multi-sensory approach</strong></p>
<p>Research tells us that using a multi-sensory approach when teaching children with learning disabilities is optimal for their learning. Aside from instruction at school, you can try using a multi-sensory approach at home with your child to help further develop their skills. With younger children, for instance, you can work on letter writing using colored sand or even sugar on a cookie sheet. Tell them the formation of a letter out loud (for instance “down, up, and around” for p, or “down and across” for t) and have them trace the letters in the colored sand or sugar. You can also try this activity using sand at a beach or dirt at a park. For older children, you can build reading comprehension and active reading skills by teaching them to identify three elements when reading: the topic, which is one two or three words describing the passage; the main idea, which is what the author is saying about the topic; and the important details. They can then highlight the topic in blue, main idea in green, and important details in yellow – or choose their own favorite three colors. Multi-sensory tutoring can help them immensely.</p>

<p><strong>They are not alone!</strong></p>
<p>Remind your child that some of the greatest leaders and most successful people in life have a learning disability or ADHD. Tom Cruise and Whoopi Goldberg have dyslexia. Michael Phelps has ADHD. Steve Jobs had dyslexia, and Leonardo Da Vinci likely had both dyslexia and ADHD. Having a learning disability is a gift, and it certainly should not hold your child back in life.</p>
<p><strong>Turn to academic tutoring if needed</strong></p>
<p>Many students with learning disabilities struggle in school. They might have trouble with one skill, like reading, while others struggle with a combination of skills, like reading and math, or executive functioning skills. Some students receive enough support at school to help them thrive, and certain parents can provide extra support at home. However, if your child continues to struggle despite these efforts, you may want to consider one-on-one multi-sensory tutoring or executive functioning coaching. Make sure, however, that it is not homework help or generic tutoring, but that it is specialized tutoring, ideally using a multi-sensory approach, provided by someone with extensive experience working with children with learning disabilities.</p>
