Summer Skills Building, Grades 1-6
August 4 - 15
August 18 - 29

During these two-week small group summer skills building programs, students learn research-based, multi-sensory techniques to develop their reading, spelling, writing, executive functioning, and math word problem solving skills. Prior to the start of the summer session, each student is individually evaluated to determine their academic levels, strengths, and weaknesses. We then provide them with customized, multi-sensory instruction tailored to their level and needs and teach them core skills that are essential for academic success.
As the demands of school rise, these skills become increasingly important to develop. In small group settings, students learn research-based strategies to provide them with the tools they need to feel confident and successful in school. Students also love our rewards program and prizes they can earn, helping to motivate and empower them.

Reading Instruction
Students develop their reading skills using the Orton Gillingham method, a systematic, research-based, multi-sensory form of instruction that helps them grasp individual sounds and syllables, blending, and multi-syllabic word strategies. With this method, students can build much stronger language and reading skills. Focus will be placed on developing decoding, encoding, and reading fluency skills.
Written Language Skills
Students will develop stronger writing skills using a research-based, multi-sensory approach to teaching, including learning how to write well-written sentences, simple paragraphs, extended paragraphs, and five paragraph essays. They will work on capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and self-checking. Multi-sensory activities and learning games will be integrated to further enhance their writing skills.
Reading Comprehension
Students will learn research-based active reading and reading comprehension strategies, including summarizing, making predictions, drawing conclusions, and inferencing. They will learn to identify the topic, main idea, and important details of passages with varying levels of text using multi-colored highlighters.
Multi-Sensory Math & Executive Functioning Skills
Students will develop stronger math word problem solving skills using hands-on, research-based, multi-sensory techniques. They will learn to move from language to arithmetic and back to language when breaking down word problems. They will also learn strategies for developing key executive functioning skills, including planning, time management, task initiation, and organization.
